The Start of the Fire<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Great Fire of London started on Sunday 2nd September 1666 in the King’s bakery in Pudding Lane. The fire raged for almost five days destroying over\u00a013,200 houses, 87 parish churches, the Royal Exchange, Guildhall & St. Paul’s Cathedral. Despite the devastation caused by the fire only a small number of Londoners perished in the fire.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Rebuilding London<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

On Thursday 5th September all of the major fires had been extinguished & the task of rebuilding London was given to Sir Christopher Wren. Wren’s new design for London featured new wider streets leading from spacious piazzas & a new St. Paul’s Cathedral as the centrepiece. The new street layout was not accepted & the City was hastily rebuilt following the original medieval street layout.<\/p>

Sir Christopher Wren was responsible for building the Monument for the Great Fire of London (finished in 1677) & the new St. Paul’s Cathedral.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Das Monument to the Great Fire of London wurde von Christopher Wren & Robert Hooke entworfen. St. Pauls Kathedrale<\/a><\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Es gab mehrere Kathedralen auf dem Gel\u00e4nde von St. Pauls aus dem Jahr 604 n. Chr. Die bemerkenswerteste davon war die Kathedrale, die zwischen 1087 und 1240 von den Normannen erbaut wurde. Die normannische St. Pauls war das gr\u00f6\u00dfte Geb\u00e4ude im mittelalterlichen England, sie \u00fcberlebte fast 600 Jahre lang die Reformation und den englischen B\u00fcrgerkrieg. Im August 1666 stellte Christopher Wren Pl\u00e4ne zur Restaurierung der Kathedrale fertig, obwohl St. Pauls wenig mehr als eine Woche sp\u00e4ter beim Gro\u00dfen Brand von London zerst\u00f6rt wurde. Der Bau der neuen Kathedrale begann 1675 und dauerte 33 Jahre. Die neue Kathedrale wurde am 2. Dezember 1667 geweiht und steht noch heute. St. Pauls ist sieben Tage die Woche zum Gebet ge\u00f6ffnet, Touristen k\u00f6nnen die Kathedrale von Montag bis Samstag besuchen.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
