Greenwich Pier is located on the South shore of the River Thames in Maritime Greenwich, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The pier sits between the famous tea clipper Cutty Sark & Sir Christopher Wren’s Riverside Masterpiece, the Old Royal Naval College. Today the Royal Borough of Greenwich is an eclectic mix of historical & modern buildings. Greenwich town centre is home to a collection of museums, pubs, restaurants, markets & shops.
A few of Greenwich’s historic buildings include the Queens House (designed by Inigo Jones & the first classical building in England) to the Royal Observatory (Sir Christopher Wren) or St. Alfege Church (Nicolas Hawksmoor).
During the 32nd Great River Race a number of River Closures will take place. Thames River Services will be operating an amended timetable during the race.

The Thames River Services Summer Timetable returns on the 1st April 2019 & cruises to the Thames Flood Barrier will operate daily until late October 2019.
The Royal Hospital for Seamen was designed by Sir Christopher Wren with assistance from Nicolas Hawksmoor. The design for the hospital included a Chapel & a large dining area (The Painted Hall). The young artist James Thornhill was commissioned to paint the hall. The agreed price was £1.00 per yard (roughly one square meter) for the walls & £3.00 per yard for the ceilings, after 19 year’s Thornhill had painted over 40,000 square feet earning him £6,685 & a Knighthood from King George I. The ceiling of the Lower Hall depicts “The Triumph of Peace & Liberty over Tyranny.” Historical characters including William III, Mary II & Louis XIV of France are depicted with mythological figures including Apollo, Hercules, Medusa & Aries inside a golden oval representing the heavens. The Lower Hall paintings depict the story of William & Mary’s victory over tyranny & arbitrary power (King Louis XIV). William is portrayed as a bringer of peace surrounded by kingly virtues. The Upper Hall depicts Queen Anne of Great Britain with her husband Prince George of Denmark. The painting is a showcase of British naval supremacy & depicts the four corners of the known world (America, Europe, Asia & Africa)

Knight School returns to the Tower of London, the crews of Cutty Sark (played by actors) & HMS Belfast (HMS Belfast’s actual crew!) will be on-board telling stories of the historic vessels pasts. Originally built at Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869 she spent her working life transporting cargo including tea from China and wool from Australia. Winter Events Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers* Beyond The Deepening Shadow is a display of thousands of flames in the Tower of London Moat. This artistic tribute was designed by Tom Piper with sound artist Mira Calix & will run for 8 nights from the 4th November 2018 until the 11th November 2018. The commemoration will unfold during the four hour display, starting with a procession led by the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London.
