Bankside Pier est situé sur la rive sud de la Tamise à côté du Millennium Bridge dans le quartier londonien de Southwark. Bankside s'étend du pont ferroviaire de Blackfriars au bord de London Bridge City et est l'un des nouveaux points chauds touristiques de Londres. Bankside et ses environs abritent une variété d'attractions historiques et contemporaines, notamment le Borough Market, la cathédrale de Southwark, le Clink Prison Museum, Golden Hinde II, Shakespeare's Globe, la Tate Modern, la Bankside Gallery et le Millennium Bridge. Bankside abrite également de nombreux restaurants, pubs, bars et se trouve à quelques pas de London Bridge City, de la City de Londres et de South Bank.

Il y a eu des colonies dans la région de Southwark depuis le premier Londinium établi par les Romains et la construction du premier pont de Londres. La zone était le point de pont le plus bas de la Tamise à l'époque romaine et son nom dérive de Sudweca qui signifie ouvrage défensif sud. La zone est devenue une artère très fréquentée après la construction d'un pont de Londres au début du Moyen Âge en c990 et le Borough Market a été créé en 1014, qui est toujours en activité aujourd'hui.

Southwark a joué un rôle défensif important et a été incendié par Guillaume le Conquérant lors de la conquête normande en 1066. William n'a pas pu traverser le pont de Londres bien fortifié et a parcouru plus de 50 miles en amont de Wallingford pour éviter d'autres passages sécurisés, notamment Reading.

À l'époque des Tudor, Bankside abritait de nombreux établissements qui n'étaient pas autorisés dans la ville de Londres, notamment des théâtres (y compris les théâtres Rose & Globe), des fosses à appâts pour animaux, des tripots et des maisons closes. Bankside a abrité de nombreux Londoniens célèbres, dont William Shakespeare au XVIIe siècle, puis Sir Christopher Wren lors de la construction de la cathédrale Saint-Paul au XVIIIe siècle.

Bankside Pier se trouve à 7 minutes à pied* de la gare de Blackfriars qui est desservie par National Rail Services et les lignes de métro Circle & District London. La jetée est également à 11 minutes à pied* de la station London Bridge qui est desservie par National Rail Services, les lignes de métro Jubilee et Northern London et un certain nombre de bus.

Greenwich Pier Closures – 19th, 20th, 27th & 28th February

Transport for London are conducting a major renovation of Greenwich Pier between November 2017 and March 2018. The renovation is expected to increase the pier’s lifespan by a decade and will involve the pontoons being removed in two phases. Some of the works which will be carried out include replacing the anchor chains, refurbishing the connection hinges between the pontoons, repairs to the main decks and a fresh coat of paint below the waterline Greenwich Pier will be closed for four days during February.
