Originally built in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham the house was purchased by King George III as a private residence for his wife, Queen Charlotte. Über die Nationalgalerie
Die Nationalgalerie wurde 1824 gegründet und am 10. Mai desselben Jahres für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. Als die Sammlung wuchs, zog die Galerie von einem kleinen Gebäude in der 100 Pall Mall in das heutige Gebäude um, ein von William Wilkins entworfenes Zweckgebäude. Sowohl das Gebäude als auch die Sammlung der National Gallery sind im Laufe der Jahre gewachsen, Sir James Pennethorne, Sir Charles Barry und Sir John Taylor haben das Gebäude alle erweitert und über 2.600 Gemälde sind jetzt in der Sammlung untergebracht. Heute ist der Besuch der Nationalgalerie kostenlos und sie organisieren eine Reihe von Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen, die Werke aus der Sammlung präsentieren. The Old Royal Naval College is Sir Christopher Wren’s riverside masterpiece, built in the 17th Century as the Royal Hospital for Seamen on the site of the Tudor Palace of Placentia. The Old Royal Naval College boasts beautiful surroundings & some of the most magnificent interiors in London. The Painted Hall in King William Court is home to the largest painted ceiling in Europe, a Baroque masterpiece by Sir James Thornhill depicting over 300 years of English aristocracy & British Naval Power. The Chapel of St Peter & St Paul in Queen Mary Court has a beautiful interior designed by James ‘Athenian’ Stewart. About Westminster Abbey
Westminster Abbey was built by King Edward (later to become St. Edward the Confessor) on the site of a Benedictine Monastery on Thorn Ey (Thorn Island) in Westminster. King Edward’s Abbey was consecrated on the 28th December 1065 however Edward was unable to attend the consecration due to illness, he died just days later sparking a succession crisis which intimately led to the Norman Conquest of England. William the Conqueror was coronated King William I on Christmas Day in 1066 & every coronation has taken place at Westminster Abbey since.
King Edward’s abbey stood for over two centuries until King Henry III started to rebuild the abbey in a Gothic style. Henry’s abbey was consecrated on the 13th October 1269 & still stands today. Westminster Abbey is the resting place of 17 monarchs & a number of poets, musicians, scientists and politicians.
