Über St. Paul's Cathedral

Es gab mehrere Kathedralen auf dem Gelände von St. Pauls aus dem Jahr 604 n. Chr. Die bemerkenswerteste davon war die Kathedrale, die zwischen 1087 und 1240 von den Normannen erbaut wurde. Die normannische St. Pauls war das größte Gebäude im mittelalterlichen England, sie überlebte fast 600 Jahre lang die Reformation und den englischen Bürgerkrieg. Im August 1666 stellte Christopher Wren Pläne zur Restaurierung der Kathedrale fertig, obwohl St. Pauls wenig mehr als eine Woche später beim Großen Brand von London zerstört wurde. Der Bau der neuen Kathedrale begann 1675 und dauerte 33 Jahre. Die neue Kathedrale wurde am 2. Dezember 1667 geweiht und steht noch heute. St. Pauls ist sieben Tage die Woche zum Gebet geöffnet, Touristen können die Kathedrale von Montag bis Samstag besuchen.

Über die Millennium Bridge

Die Millennium Bridge verbindet Bankside an der South Shore mit der City of London im Norden. Die Brücke wurde im Juni 2000 eröffnet und erhielt ihren Spitznamen „Wobbly Bridge“, nachdem eine unerwartete schwankende Bewegung dazu führte, dass sie geschlossen wurde. Nach fast zwei Jahren Umbau wurde die Brücke wieder eröffnet.

The Old Billingsgate Fish Market was designed by Horace Jones (who also designed Leadenhall Market and worked with John Wolf Barry to design Tower Bridge).

The market was completed in 1875 and was open until it moved to larger premises in Docklands in 1982. The old market building was refurbished by Richard Roger’s and is now an events venue.

George Orwell, the Kray Twins and Michael Caine were just a few famous Londoners who worked at Old Billingsgate at one time or another.
