Winter Events Beyond the Deepening Shadow: The Tower Remembers* Beyond The Deepening Shadow is a display of thousands of flames in the Tower of London Moat. This artistic tribute was designed by Tom Piper with sound artist Mira Calix & will run for 8 nights from the 4th November 2018 until the 11th November 2018. The commemoration will unfold during the four hour display, starting with a procession led by the Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London. There’s plenty to do on & around the River Thames during half term. Thames River Services operate cruises between Westminster, St Katharine Pier (for Tower of London) & Greenwich linking some of London’s top destinations & attractions. The Great River Race 2018 Great River Race Pier Closures Today is the 30th Great River Race. A number of river closures are in place throughout the day. Approximate closure times include: St. Katharine Pier | 10:25-11:25 Westminster Pier Pier | 11:05-12:05 There will be no departures from these piers during these times. After the race has passed Westminster Bridge services should return to the usual time table. The Start of the Fire The Great Fire of London started on Sunday 2nd September 1666 in the King’s bakery in Pudding Lane. The fire raged for almost five days destroying over 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, the Royal Exchange, Guildhall & St. Paul’s Cathedral. Despite the devastation caused by the fire only a small number of Londoners perished in the fire. Rebuilding London On Thursday 5th September all of the major fires had been extinguished & the task of rebuilding London was given to Sir Christopher Wren. Wren’s new design for London featured new wider streets leading from spacious piazzas & a new St. Paul’s Cathedral as the centrepiece. The new street layout was not accepted & the City was hastily rebuilt following the original medieval street layout. Sir Christopher Wren was responsible for building the Monument for the Great Fire of London (finished in 1677) & the new St. Paul’s Cathedral. About the Royal Hospital for Seamen & Painted Hall The Royal Hospital for Seaman at Greenwich was built under the instructions of Mary II. Mary had been inspired by the sight of injured sailors returning from the Battle of La Hogue in 1692 & wanted to provide a naval counterpart to the Chelsea Hospital for soldiers. The new hospital was designed by Sir Christopher Wren & his assistant Nicolas Hawksmoor. The original design featured a large structure topped by an enormous dome, Mary II ordered that the buildings be split to preserve the view from the Queens House (completed in 1935 by Inigo Jones). The new design for the Royal Hospital featured four main wings & two smaller domes. Queen Mary Court housed the hospitals Chapel & King William Court housed the painted hall. James Thornhill & the Painted Hall The young artist James Thornhill was commissioned to decorate the painted hall, the agreed price for the work was £1 per square yard for the walls & £3 per square yard for the ceiling. After 20 years Thornhill had finished one of the largest painted ceilings in Northern Europe at 40,000 square foot. The masterpiece earned him a fortune &
